Problem 7.2.4

Experimental data (yA, K) on the retention of oil by liver is given where yA is mass ratio of oil to solution in the overflow, and K is mass ratio of solution retained to mass of inert (liver).  Construct Ponchon-Savarit equilibrium diagram (YI versus XA) for this system.

Solution:

Mass fraction of the inerts, YI, is given by I over (A plus S).  xA is mass ratio of oil to solution in the underflow.  Its value is the same as yA, the mass ratio of oil to solution in the overflow.  Mass ratio of the solute, XA, is given by A over (A plus S).  This is represented as XA which is equal to A over (A plus S).

Data point (yA, K) is converted to (XA, YI) simply as follows:  XA is equal to xA is also equal to yA.  YI is equal to one over K.

Now we can draw a graph between YI and XA.  This graph is called Ponchon-Savarit diagram.  A vertical line on this curve represents a tie-line (xA is equal to yA).
